Even Children Need Heart Healthy Meals

Heart health is something a lot of people don’t start thinking about until they get older. They might not worry about it in their younger years, or think much about it when it comes to their children. However, it’s important to remember that younger people and even children can have heart health concerns. Genetic problems can’t be avoided, but making sure children eat healthily can help protect their hearts starting at an early age, for a better quality of life in the long run.

Teach Children About Hearth Health

Teaching your kids about the importance and value of good heart health is one of the best ways to get them interested in something that will benefit them for a lifetime. By making it age appropriate, they can help with meal times, get exercise that’s fun, and participate in all kinds of adventures with you, their siblings, and their friends. You don’t have to go into a lot of detail to get your children interested, either, as long as you find ways to make it fun for their age and interests.

Provide Healthy Meals and Snacks

Along with many other medical professionals, Ian Weisberg points out that healthy meals and snacks are extremely valuable to a child’s overall development. When children learn good nutrition and portion size from early ages they’re less likely to overeat in the future. They may also be less interested in eating a lot of food that doesn’t have any real nutrition in it, and that can keep them feeling better and at a healthier weight for their height as they grow up.

Occasional Treats Are Generally Fine

Dr. Ian Weisberg also encourages parents to allow their children occasional treats, and to help them distinguish between everyday foods and sometimes foods. Sometimes, foods are things like cookies, cake, or ice cream, that can taste really good, but they aren’t healthy options for everyday consumption. If you completely deny kids treats, though, they may overeat on them when they get access, such as at a friend’s house. Finding a balance is best.

Your Doctor Can Provide Support

Working with your doctor can help you and your children get the support they need to eat healthily, get exercise, and take good care of their hearts. If you have questions or concerns, or just need to get checkups for your family, it’s important to get in touch with your doctor and make sure you and your loved ones are practicing good heart health.
